Thanks to Warren Beatty, John Travolta no longer holds the record for "Most Awkward Oscars Moment." Calling Idina Menzel "Adele Dazeem" is nothing compared to giving the Best Picture Oscar to the wrong film.
However, as it turns out, the royal f*ck up wasn't Beatty's fault. It was the accountants.
PricewaterhouseCoopers' sent a statement to Mashable on Sunday night, apologizing for their mistake:
"We sincerely apologize to 'Moonlight', 'La La Land', Warren Beatty, Faye Dunaway, and Oscar® viewers for the error that was made during the award announcement for Best Picture. The presenters had mistakenly been given the wrong category envelope and when discovered, was immediately corrected. We are currently investigating how this could have happened, and deeply regret that this occurred. We appreciate the grace with which the nominees, the Academy, ABC, and Jimmy Kimmel handled the situation."
Translation: there are two copies of every envelope, so somehow, Beatty was given that copy...and decided to roll with it.
The most shocking moment was the faces of the 'La La Land' cast and crew finding out the real Best Picture winner. Emma Stone gave us the performance of a life time when she found out the unfortunate plot twist:
Ryan Gosling however, didn't seem to be as shocked as Stone. In fact, he found the whole situation rather hilarious:
But all in all, our favorite reaction has to come from 'La La Land' director Damien Chazelle:
Welllll...that was awkward. It's safe to say someone got fired on Sunday. You had one job, accountants. One job.
